This course covers fundamentals of classical and modern optics. It will include both fundamental physical discussion of optical effects and discussion of a number of topics useful in understanding opical instruments. Physical optics, reflection, refraction, interference, diffraction, and polarization are interpreted in terms of the wave theory of light. Modern topics will include discussions of photons, optical fibers, lasers, holograms, non-linear optics, phase-contrast microscopy and additional items as time permits.
