There will be 12 homework assignments, nominally due at the start of each Friday lecture (starting January 12) but with two exceptions, as shown below:

Assigned homework problems will be web-posted at least one week before their due date. Solutions will be posted on the web site after each Friday lecture. Both problem assignments and solutions will be posted as pdf (portable document format) files. These files can be read with the Adobe Acrobat Reader software, which is installed already on most U-M computers and can be downloaded for free from Adobe. The program can be run automatically (separately or as an integrated "plug-in") from your Web browser, allowing you to quickly examine and print out documents.

Because solutions will be posted immediately, late homework will not be accepted.

There will be an in-class, 50-minute midterm exam covering chapters 7-9 of the Abers text on Friday February 23, and the final exam covering all of chapters 7-13 will be held Monday April 23 4:00-6:00 p.m.

Course grades will be based on homework (40%), the midterm exam (20%) and the final exam (40%).
