From keithr@tenaya.physics.lsa.umich.edu Wed Oct 16 22:36:13 2002 Date: Fri, 4 Oct 2002 17:41:21 -0400 (EDT) From: Keith Riles To: LSC Detector Characterization Working Group Subject: E9 Engineering run and "mini-runs" Dear Colleagues, At today's detector characterization teleconference we discussed at some length when to hold an E9 engineering run as a shakedown effort for the S2 run starting in mid-February. There was a fragile consensus at the end that we should probably hold E9 roughly one month before S2, essentially right after the official hardware and software freeze at the sites. The purpose of E9 then would be to shake down operational procedures and to fine-tune the DMT monitors and other online software. Unlike for E8, DMT authors would not be encouraged to add new features to their monitors. Updating configuration files (and fixing bugs) would be the main task. It was felt, however, that many DMT monitors still need improvement between now and then, and it was suggested that a less formal set of "mini-runs" (of several hours each on weekends) be held opportunistically at the sites, as commissioning proceeds. These mini-runs would be more suited to code development (and of course to bug-fixing too) and would increase the likelihood of success in E9 and S2. Mini-runs would not, in general, be held simultaneously at both sites. I'd like to put together a concrete plan for both the mini-runs and E9 and solicit your input on this tentative scheme. For example, if you are a DMT author, would you be willing to fly to one site or the other on, say, a week's notice to participate in a mini-run? Do you feel comfortable waiting until 1 month before S2 to hold a true shakedown run? (Fred Raab, for one, feels uneasy about this.) Please send me your thoughts, and I'll try to propose a sensible scheme for us to follow. thanks, Keith --------------------------------------------------------- Keith Riles | Phone: (734) 764-4652 Associate Professor, Physics | Lab: 763-7208 University of Michigan | Fax: 936-6529 500 E.
